New bird to science – an exciting discovery in North East India.jpg)
Some exciting news for birdwatchers. A new species of bird to science has recently been discovered in Arunachal Pradesh. In 1995 Ramana Athreya glimpsed two liocichlas (a kind of Asian babbler at Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary which did not fit any field guide descriptions. It was another 10 years before he saw the birds again and the closest species looked to be Emei Shan Liocichla, endemic to maountainour parts of south-west China. In May 2006 Athreya mist-netted the species and the subsequent notes, photographs, measurements and collection of feathers (to define the holotype) have confirmed a new species.
Named the Bugun Liocichla, it is one of four species of Liocichla found in the Oriental Region and was named after the Bugun people resident in the area around Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary where it was found.
